Why use Stored Procedures? (From sqlblog.com)
There are as many opinions for and against using stored procedures as there are database-related roles. I believe the position that is most qualified to speak to stored procedures is the data architect?s role. Data architecture is the role that studies the various methods, patterns, standards, and best-practices that result in databases that will, together, best serve the organization now and in the future. by Paul Nielsen
Stacked Column Chart for Analysis Services Data (From www.databasejournal.com)
This article focuses upon Stacked Column charts, and extends the examination of Reporting Services charts for Analysis Services data sources that we began in an earlier article. Encrypting Large Values (From www.simple-talk.com)
Federal identification numbers and credit card numbers are regulars when it comes to encrypting data. The US plain text version of the prior is eleven characters. The latter is typically sixteen characters. When these are encrypted using a symmetric key the size of the cipher text will range from thirty-nine to sixty eight bytes depending upon the selected algorithm. These lengths hardly raise the question of whether the cipher text will result in a breach of the size limit for a row. There may be times when the data that is requiring encryption is very large. Book manuscripts, official documents, schematics, blue prints, images, and archived e-mail messages are just a few examples of data that are stored in a database and can easily be lar
Finding the Worst Performing T-SQL Statements on an Instance (From www.databasejournal.com)
One of the key things to consider when building a successful application is to make sure the application performance meets the customer?s expectation. In this article, I will introduce you to some Dynamic Management Views (DMVs) and Dynamic Management Functions (DMFs) that will help you monitor your application?s T-SQL performance. In addition, I will provide you with a Stored Procedure (SP) that will utilize the DMVs and DMFs to produce a report that will allow you to quickly identify poorly performing T-SQL statements, at either the instance, or database level.

Monster.com, the popular online job-hunting site, is reporting another major breach of its user database -- the third time it has disclosed such a breach in the past two years.
In a warning issued to users on Friday, Monster.com stated that its "database was illegally accessed and certain contact and account data were taken, including Monster user IDs and passwords, email addresses, names, phone numbers, and some basic demographic data." The stolen data did not include resumes, the company said.
The warning does not offer any details on how the breach occurred or how it was discovered. However, it does say the company will be requiring users to change their passwords in the near future, and recommends that they change them proactive
